  1. The Gulf war was a war between the 16th
  2. January to the 28th February 1991 between 
  3. Iraq and a coalition of 28 nations led by the
  4. USA. (It is also another name for the 
  5. Iran-Iraq War). The invasion and annexation
  6. of Kuwait by Iraq on the 2nd August 1990 
  7. provoked a build-up of US troops in Saudi
  8. Arabia, eventually totalling over 500,000.
  9. The UK subsequently deployed 42,000 troops,
  10. France 15,000, Egypt 20,000, and other 
  11. nations smaller contingents. An air 
  12. offensive lasting six weeks, in which `smart' 
  13. weapons came of age, destroyed about 
  14. one-third of Iraqi equipment and inflicted 
  15. massive casualties.
